State Department Issues Tar Sands Pipeline Permit

Law360, New York (August 21, 2009, 3:34 PM EDT) -- The U.S. Department of State has issued a permit to Enbridge Inc. for a pipeline that would bring in oil from Canada's tar sands, immediately triggering environmental groups to indicate their intent to sue to stop the project.

The State Department said Thursday that the pipeline, known as the Alberta Clipper, would advance the strategic interests of the United States, including increasing crude oil supplies from a major non-OPEC producer and shortening transportation pathways.
