Methane Surge Preceded W.Va. Mine Blast: Massey

Law360, New York (July 22, 2010, 5:54 PM EDT) -- Massey Energy Co. said Thursday that evidence of a sudden and unusually large methane release in its Upper Big Branch Mine in West Virginia on April 5 could help determine the cause of an explosion that killed 29 miners.

Massey said that its analysis of ventilation exhaust in the UBB mine revealed a release of methane that was nearly three times greater than normal for that time, the company said.
