7th Circ. Scraps Child Labor Suit Against Firestone

Law360, New York (July 11, 2011, 8:41 PM EDT) -- The Seventh Circuit on Monday tossed an Alien Tort Statute suit accusing Firestone Natural Rubber Co. of illegally using child labor at a plantation in Liberia, but said that the statute can apply to corporate defendants.

The evidence against Firestone was simply too weak to sustain a suit, a three-judge panel said.

“We have not been given an adequate basis for inferring a violation of customary international law,” the panel said.
