Locke Urges US To Take Action On Icelandic Whaling

Law360, New York (July 20, 2011, 7:06 PM EDT) -- Commerce Secretary Gary Locke said Wednesday he was urging the Obama administration to take action to discourage Iceland's commercial whaling trade, including telling cabinet members to halt visits to the country if it doesn't stop the practice.

Iceland's harvest of endangered fin whales — which has increased dramatically in recent years — runs afoul of the International Whaling Commission's 1982 moratorium on commercial whaling, Locke wrote in a letter to President Barack Obama on Tuesday.
