HHS Report Gives A Leg Up To Supplement-Wary Lawmakers

Law360, New York (October 3, 2012, 9:22 PM EDT) -- A government watchdog report released Wednesday calling on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to toughen its regulation of dietary supplement makers offers help to lawmakers seeking to tighten labeling requirements for the products, attorneys say.

A sample of supplements analyzed by the Office of the Inspector General for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services did not consistently adhere to FDA guidance for structure/function claims, which are used to promote a supplement's supposed benefits to human health, according to the report.
