Lawmakers Ask FDA For Tighter Oversight On Energy Drinks

Law360, New York (October 26, 2012, 4:18 PM EDT) -- A pair of Senate lawmakers urged the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Friday to close loopholes that allow energy drink manufacturers to avoid proper oversight, expressing concern about recent findings linking the consumption of Monster Beverage Corp. drinks to five deaths over the last three years.

Dick Durbin, D-Ill., and Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., asked the FDA to investigate interactions between caffeine and stimulants in energy drinks, determine the health risks associated with adolescent caffeine consumption and finalize guidance differentiating dietary supplements from beverages.
