Va. Gov. Signs Nation's 1st Biosimilar Substitution Law

Law360, New York (March 21, 2013, 3:59 PM EDT) -- Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell on Thursday signed into law legislation restricting when and how biosimilar drugs may be substituted for prescribed biologic medications, the first such law to be instituted in the U.S.

The legislation, involving two identical state House and Senate bills — H.B. 1422 and S.B. 1285 — allows pharmacists to substitute biosimilars for a pioneer biologic only when U.S. Food and Drug Administration deems the treatments functionally interchangeable.
