Pittsburgh Defends Challenge To UPMC Tax Exemption

Law360, New York (October 1, 2013, 4:02 PM ET) -- Pittsburgh defended its efforts to challenge the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center's tax-free status in state court Thursday, rejecting the health care giant's claims that the city failed to take advantage of administrative remedies before filing its suit.

The city said in a filing that contrary to UPMC's claims, the state's Local Taxpayer Bill of Rights Act and the city's payroll tax regulations do not apply to its argument that the hospital system does not count as a charitable organization for tax purposes.
