Deals Rumor Mill: America Movil, Mercuria, Deutsche Telekom

By Karlee Weinmann (February 5, 2014, 3:59 PM EST) -- Spain's Telefonica SA is pursuing a deal that would merge its Mexican operations with Grupo Iusacell SA de CV to better position both companies to compete with Carlos Slim's America Movil SAB de CV, Spanish newspaper El Economista reported on Wednesday. The parties have not yet decided which of them would lead the combined company, which would primarily be a mobile provider. Telefonica has long sought to knock down Slim's empire in his home country, and joining with Iusacell would give it virtually all of the market share not already held by America Movil. Iusacell is part-owned by Mexican broadcaster Grupo Televisa SAB....
