Law360, New York (May 30, 2014, 1:29 PM EDT) -- Microsoft Corp.'s decision to end technical support for the Windows XP operating system effective April 8, 2014, means that health care practitioners whose computers continue to use it may be at higher risk of a data breach or other "security incident" under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. Some computer consultants and industry commentators have even claimed that simply continuing to use Windows XP on computers that are connected to the Internet is now an "automatic HIPAA violation."
