U.K. Watchdog Renews Criticism Of Microsoft Office

Law360, New York (May 13, 2008, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Microsoft Corp.'s supposedly open-source OOXML file format discourages competition, Britain's IT watchdog agency told the European Commission on Monday.

The British Educational Communications and Technology Agency (BECTA) said that the new Office format works poorly with rival software used in schools around the U.K., hurting students, teachers and parents.

“BECTA believes that impediments to interoperability limit choice,” the agency said.
