ACA-Compliant 'Skinny Plans' Hold Promise For Employers

Law360, New York (November 12, 2014, 10:25 AM EST) -- On Nov. 4, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and U.S. Department of the Treasury, including the Internal Revenue Service, released a guidance document advising that health plans offered by large employers that do not provide coverage for inpatient hospital services do not provide "minimum value" under Affordable Care Act regulations. As a result, employees who are offered these limited-coverage plans, known as skinny plans, will not lose their eligibility to receive premium tax credits if they elect to obtain coverage through the federal or state insurance exchanges that have been established under the ACA....
