Gas Hydrates Sources Are Vast But Costly: USGS

Law360, New York (November 12, 2008, 12:00 AM EST) -- Vast natural gas deposits in northern Alaska could prove a leading source for domestic energy production, according to a new study by the U.S. Geological Survey, but doubts remain whether the find can be economically developed.

On Wednesday, Secretary of the Interior Dirk Kempthorne and U.S. Geological Survey Director Mark Myers released a USGS study estimating that there are 85.4 trillion cubic feet of recoverable gas in the form of natural gas hydrates on the Alaskan North Slope.
