Democrats Avert Filibuster On Lands Bill

Law360, New York (January 12, 2009, 12:00 AM EST) -- Democratic supporters of a massive package of public lands bills in the U.S. Senate have attained enough votes to block a filibuster from Republicans who decry the 1,294-page measure as laden with pork.

Sixty-six senators voted on Sunday to move forward with the Omnibus Public Lands Management Act of 2009, yielding its supporters more than the 59 votes they needed to thwart efforts to halt the bill's progress.

Twelve senators voted against the bill, all of them Republicans.
