Japan Outpaces Germany In Global Patent Filings

Law360, New York (February 20, 2004, 12:00 AM ET) -- For the first time in over a decade, Japan outpaced Germany to rank second in the number of international patent applications under the Patent Cooperation Treaty in 2003, according to the World Intellectual Property Organization.

Bolstered by a rising tide of applications in the field of information technology, the number of international patent applications by Japan rose 24% 16,700.

WIPO said it expects the number of Japan's annual patent applications to rise further to some 30,000 in the foreseeable future.
