Kaplan, West Agree To Pay $5M In Bar Prep Scheme Suit

Law360, New York (March 23, 2011, 2:17 PM ET) -- A federal judge in California conditionally approved a $5.2 million settlement Monday in a class action accusing Kaplan Inc. and West Publishing Corp. of illegally colluding to raise the price of bar exam preparation courses.

Judge Manuel L. Real of the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California also conditionally certified a class comprised of anyone who purchased West’s BAR/BRI bar review course between Aug. 1, 2006, and the date of the settlement’s final approval, about 165,000 people, according to court documents.
