Law360, New York (October 05, 2012, 2:13 PM ET) -- Apache Corp. launched a preemptive strike against Motion Picture Licensing Corp. in Texas federal court Thursday, asking for a ruling that the oil and gas exploration company does not need additional licenses to provide satellite television on its offshore rigs.
Apache says MPLC has been demanding the company pay fees for “public performances” of copyrighted movies that offshore workers watch through a subscription to DirecTV. MPLC represents movie studios and sells umbrella licenses that authorize public airings of movies that were intended only for private viewing....
