EPA Issues Proposal For Underground CO2 Storage

Law360, New York (July 15, 2008, 12:00 AM ET) -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has issued a proposed set of rules governing an emerging technology for underground storage of carbon dioxide from coal power plants.

The proposal, unveiled Tuesday, aims to make sure that using the process known as geologic sequestration to store carbon dioxide does not contaminate drinking water.

Environmental regulations for sequestration are needed because carbon dioxide is corrosive when it comes into contact with water, and carbon dioxide captured from power plants will likely contain impurities and require very large injection volumes,...
