EU Eyes Comprehensive Oil Platform Safety Legislation

Law360, New York (October 13, 2010, 6:27 PM ET) -- The European Commission is planning to present legislative proposals in early 2011 aimed at establishing state-of-the-art safety standards for offshore oil platforms across the European Union, in an effort to stave off a disaster similar to April's Deepwater Horizon catastrophe in the Gulf of Mexico.

The EC is contemplating comprehensive oil platform legislation geared toward ensuring the highest safety standards in the world, the commission said in a statement Wednesday, adding that the damage an offshore accident could cause does not know borders.
