Ethics And Compliance — A Necessary Pair

Law360, New York (April 12, 2011, 12:26 PM ET) -- If the IRS quietly reduced the number of tax audits that it conducts of businesses and individuals, would there be a consequent upswing in tax fraud, tax cheating, omissions in income reporting or inflated deductions? Perhaps. Or would corporate and individual ethics carry the day while the IRS saved taxpayers money by reducing its enforcement budget? I think reason dictates that, eventually, a significant reduction in audits would result in an increase in noncompliance.
