Marvel Whacks Artist's Heirs Over Superhero Rights

Law360, New York (January 08, 2010, 4:54 PM ET) -- Marvel Characters Inc. sued the heirs of comic book artist Jack Kirby on Friday in a bid to block their efforts to terminate the Walt Disney Co. unit's rights to several superhero characters, including the Incredible Hulk, Spider-Man and the X-Men.

The complaint — filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York by three subsidiaries of Marvel Entertainment LLC — seeks a declaration that the 45 notices of termination that several Kirby heirs sent Marvel in September are invalid.
