Computer Giants Sue Motorola Unit To Invalidate JPEG Patent

Law360, New York (July 07, 2004, 12:00 AM ET) -- A coalition of 20 computer companies, including IBM Corp. and Hewlett-Packard Co., has sued Forgent Networks Inc. and Motorola Inc.'s General Instrument Corp. in an effort to invalidate a patent for the JPEG standard of digital image processing.

The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware, claims Forgent's Compression Labs Inc. and General Instrument are wrongly trying to enforce their 1987 signal-coding patent, which the plaintiffs assert is unenforceable.
