USPTO Cutting Into Patent App Backlog: Kappos

Law360, New York (September 08, 2010, 6:06 PM ET) -- Despite an expected 4 percent increase in patent filings in 2010, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office is on pace to achieve its first significant reduction in patent application backlogs in a decade, Director David Kappos said Wednesday.

In the past year, the USPTO has reduced the backlog from more than 750,000 applications to about 728,000 applications at the end of August, and expects to bring the backlog down to less than 700,000 soon, Kappos said.
