BlackBerry Maker Settles Patent Dispute For $613M

Law360, New York (March 03, 2006, 12:00 AM ET) -- In a move that will avert a blackout of the popular BlackBerry service, Canada’s Research in Motion Ltd. has agreed to pay $612.5 million to settle a lawsuit brought by NTP Inc.

Terms of the settlement were confirmed by NTP lawyer Jim Wallace. The licensing figure was somewhat lower than the $1 billion figure that had been rumored, but higher than the $450 million settlement the two parties struck a year ago. That settlement was thrown out by the judge overseeing the case.
