Google To Appeal German Thumbnail Copyright Suits

Law360, New York (October 13, 2008, 12:00 AM ET) -- Google Germany GmbH plans to appeal two German court decisions holding that thumbnails created by the company's image-search tool violate the artwork owners' copyrights, the Internet search giant said Monday.

A judge for the Regional Court of Hamburg ruled for photographer Michael Bernhard in one suit and for comics-copyright holder Thomas Horn in a second case over whether Google has the right to display thumbnails of images as search results without obtaining the consent of the copyright owner, according to Google.
