U. Of Ill. Tells 7th Circ. Privacy Law Blocks FOIA Request

Law360, Chicago (September 30, 2011, 3:32 PM ET) -- An attorney for the University of Illinois on Friday told the Seventh Circuit the school was exempt under federal privacy law from granting the Tribune Co.'s Freedom of Information Act request for dirt on the school's purportedly shady admissions process.

Gregory Ostfeld of Greenberg Traurig LLP said at oral arguments that the university, as a public university receiving federal funding, cannot release information the Chicago Tribune seeks on high-profile sponsors for student applicants because disclosure of those records is specifically prohibited under the Family Educational Rights...
