Accused Music Thief Says Downloading Caused No Damages

Law360, New York (April 04, 2012, 3:08 PM ET) -- A woman accused of illegally downloading music copyrighted by major record labels told the Eighth Circuit on Monday she shouldn't have to pay statutory damages for her alleged transgressions since the labels' injury is attributable to the wider file sharing community.

Jammie Thomas-Rasset's $1.5 million damages penalty in Minnesota federal court was later reduced to $54,000 by that same court, and the Eighth Circuit is considering an appeal of that reduction lodged by major record companies Capitol Records Inc., Sony BMG Music Entertainment, Arista Records LLC,...
