Law360, New York (July 09, 2012, 7:47 PM ET) -- An Illinois federal judge on Friday blocked the enforcement of a controversial state law that bars civilians from making audio recordings of police officers performing their official duties in public places.
U.S. District Judge Sharon Johnson Coleman issued the preliminary injunction after the Seventh Circuit ruled in May that the Illinois law couldn't be enforced against the American Civil Liberties Union and its employees because prosecuting for such recordings likely violated the First Amendment rights of the public.
