Bees Getting Stung: Law And Science Uncertain, Food At Risk

Law360, New York (July 17, 2015, 11:07 AM EDT) -- Steep population declines in pollinator species have sparked major international attention, most recently with the May release of the National Strategy to Promote the Health of Pollinators[1] by the White House Pollinator Task Force. Pollinator declines have piqued international concerns in part due to their integral role in the success of the food industry, with bee activity alone contributing to at least 35 percent of world food production.[2] Pesticides such as neonicotinoids are considered to be a threat, but the cause of this sharp decrease is contested by scientists and the pesticide industry. In response, governments and the scientific community have rallied to investigate and take action. Although the international scientific community has released conflicting reports, the EU reacted promptly and boldly, placing a two-year moratorium on the use of three neonicotinoids in December 2013.[3] However, the U.S. has now addressed the issue as the Pollinator Task Force has issued the national strategy. Although all federal agencies are involved in the task force, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Department of Agriculture are taking the lead. It remains to be seen whether the ambitious strategy will change the international dynamic....
