Law360, New York (December 21, 2009, 5:18 PM ET) -- The U.S. Department of Transportation announced a rule Monday that prohibits airlines from keeping passengers aboard a delayed plane for more than three hours, responding to fury over recent tarmac waits that have left travelers stranded.
The rule applies to all U.S. airlines operating domestic flights and goes into effect in 120 days. It allows exceptions only if air traffic control tells the pilot in command that returning to the terminal would disrupt airport operations.
