USDA Seeks Mandatory Testing For Meat Products

Law360, New York (April 05, 2011, 12:14 PM ET) -- The U.S. Department of Agriculture floated a proposal Tuesday that would require meat producers to test their products for foodborne illnesses prior to selling them to consumers, a policy that has already received support from the meat industry.

Many meat producers currently follow this so-called test-and-hold policy voluntarily, but Tuesday's proposal would make it mandatory. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack said Tuesday that the policy could have prevented 44 recalls in the last several years.
