DOJ Weeds Through Monsanto Seed Practices

Law360, New York (October 09, 2009) -- Monsanto Co. has received inquiries about competition in the seed industry from the U.S. Department of Justice that stem from antitrust allegations raised by rival DuPont Co. as part of its defense against Monsanto’s patent infringement suit over technology for herbicide-resistant genetically modified soybeans and corn.

Monsanto spokesman Lee Quarles said Friday that the DOJ had made requests in August over DuPont’s allegations that Monsanto violated antitrust laws in the modified seed market....
