Supreme Court Takes Overseas Shipping Contract Case

Law360, New York (October 20, 2009) -- The U.S. Supreme Court has agreed to hear Union Pacific Railroad Co.'s appeal in a case over whether private contracts should govern a dispute with parties including Regal-Beloit Corp. and PICC Property & Casualty Co. Ltd. over cargo damage from a 2005 train derailment on the inland U.S. leg of a shipment from China.

On Tuesday the Supreme Court granted two separate petitions for certiorari from Union Pacific and Japanese shipping company Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha Ltd. and consolidated the appeals....
