Hyundai Ordered To Pay $34M Over Online Patent

Law360, New York (May 30, 2007) -- A jury on Tuesday found that Hyundai Motor America willfully infringed a sales method patent for Web sites, and ordered the company to pay $34 million. The verdict could mean bad news for the several dozen other companies that have been the target of lawsuits by patent-holding company Orion IP LLC over the same technology.

Orion claimed that Hyundai's Web sites, www.hyundaiusa.com and www.hyundaidealer.com, infringed two sales method patents, while Hyundai argued that the patents were invalid based on anticipation and obviousness. The jury in...
