Hospice Co. Pays $13M To Settle False Claims Probes

Law360, New York (July 12, 2006, 12:00 AM ET) -- Odyssey HealthCare Inc. will pay $13 million to end federal investigations that grew out of two whistleblower actions brought under the False Claims Act, after striking deals with the U.S. Department of Justice, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Office of the Inspector General.

The DOJ’s investigation focused on the claims submitted to the government since January 1, 2000. Odyssey, the first hospice care provider to be publicly traded, derives income from Medicare reimbursements it receives for caring for dying patients. The...
