Law360, New York (May 04, 2012, 2:44 PM ET) -- A Tennessee medical practice specializing in kidney ailments will pay nearly $4.5 million to settle a whistleblower's False Claims Act claims that it scammed Medicare and Medicaid by double billing and charging taxpayers for drugs it received for free, the U.S. Department of Justice said Thursday.
Knoxville-based Apex Medical Group PC and several affiliated dialysis centers looted federal and state coffers from 2001 through 2006, using a variety of tactics that became known when billing department employee Kristi Moore filed suit, according to the DOJ.
