$300M Philip Morris Verdict Sliced To $38.9M In Fla.

Law360, New York (February 25, 2010, 1:06 PM ET) -- A Florida judge has reduced a $300 million jury verdict against Philip Morris USA Inc. down to $38.9 million, finding the award given to a former smoker with emphysema was excessive.

Judge Jeffrey Streitfeld of the Seventeenth Judicial Circuit of Florida in Broward County on Wednesday trimmed back the award a jury had granted to 61-year-old Lucinda Naugle. The award had consisted of more than $56 million in compensatory damages and $244 million in punitive damages.
