USDA Takes Steps To Speed Up E. Coli Tracking

Law360, New York (May 02, 2012, 5:53 PM ET) -- The U.S. Department of Agriculture plans to enact new trace-back measures to speed up the government's response to E. coli contamination and prevent more foodborne illnesses and outbreaks, the agency announced Wednesday.

Instead of waiting for confirmation of positive test results, the USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service will respond immediately when presumptive E. coli testing indicates contamination, by moving to determine the source of the pathogen and the processors that received contaminated products, according to the new policy.
