Penalties Against Music Downloader Not Too Hefty: 8th Circ.

Law360, New York (September 11, 2012, 5:24 PM ET) -- The Eighth Circuit on Tuesday upheld the constitutionality of a $222,000 damages award against a woman accused of illegally downloading 24 songs owned by major record labels including Capitol Records Inc. and Sony BMG Music Entertainment, and barred her from further distributing the music.

In a unanimous, published decision the appeals court found that Capitol and Sony, along with Arista Records LLC, Interscope Records, Warner Brothers Records Inc., UMG Recordings Inc. and the Recording Industry Association of America, were entitled to $222,000 in damages from Jammie...
