NCAA Scholarship Class Actions Merged In Calif. Court

Law360, Los Angeles (June 4, 2014, 8:27 PM EDT) -- The U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation on Wednesday consolidated antitrust class actions brought by college athletes claiming they were shortchanged on their scholarships, ruling the suits involve common questions of fact and belong in the Northern District of California, where similar litigation is pending.

The five-judge panel decided that the centralization of the actions — which assert putative nationwide classes that overlap significantly — will eliminate duplicative discovery; prevent inconsistent pretrial rulings over class certification and other matters; and conserve the resources of the parties,...
