Scruggs is a former trial lawyer whose work representing the state of Mississippi and 28 other states and territories in the 1990s litigation against Big Tobacco resulted in the $248 billion Tobacco Master Settlement Agreement. He also represented plaintiffs in asbestos litigation, as well as homeowners suing insurance companies over property damage coverage in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. He was disbarred in 2008 after pleading guilty to a judicial bribery scheme and served six years in prison. Since his release in 2014, Scruggs has run a nonprofit, 2nd Chance MS, to raise awareness and funds for adult education in the state of Mississippi....
