While employers must reimburse employees for business-related mileage in some states, many states — e.g., North and South Carolina — have no such mandate. But most employers offer reimbursement anyway, usually for recruitment and retention purposes or for a general sense of fairness. Reimbursements made at or below the Internal Revenue Service standard mileage rate — currently 54.5 cents per mile — are not treated as taxable income to the employee. ...
