Dems Want Probe Into Mineral Lease Work In Monument Area

Law360 (May 23, 2019, 8:17 PM EDT) -- Two Democratic lawmakers urged the U.S. Government Accountability Office on Wednesday to look into whether the Trump administration is flouting federal restrictions by working to set the stage for energy development in the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument area.

Sen. Tom Udall, D-N.M., and Rep. Betty McCollum, D-Minn., are requesting an investigation into whether the U.S. Department of the Interior is violating enduring prohibitions against using appropriated money to advance resource development on land that’s historically been part of a national monument.

Their concern stems from the DOI’s efforts to start identifying parts of the Utah monument area that may be appropriate...
