Competition remains weak in New Zealand grocery sector, antitrust watchdog warns

( August 6, 2025, 00:00 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: New Zealand needs to do more to promote competition in the grocery sector, with prices still above the average of countries in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, according to the country’s grocery commissioner. The New Zealand Commerce Commission 2024 Annual Grocery Report, published today, reveals that while grocery prices in 2024 appeared to stabilize after years of growth, in 2025 retail prices appeared to go up again, with the major supermarkets maintaining their 82 percent market share. Grocery Commissioner Pierre van Heerden also warned of geographic differences in the supermarkets’ dominance, with consumers in the city of Auckland having a range of choices while in smaller towns the large supermarkets can operate as a “localized monopoly.” The report also reveals that barriers to market entry remain. The full Commerce Commission's 2024 grocery report is attached and the regulator's full statement follows: ...
