Weigh up benefits of frequent-flyer programs, Australian watchdog tells travelers

( August 12, 2025, 03:04 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Australian travelers should understand how air-travel frequent-flyer programs work and weigh up whether the drawbacks of always booking with a certain airline are worth the benefits of accruing points, the country’s competition regulator has warned. In a statement accompanying its most recent report on domestic air-travel competition, the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission said frequent-flyer points may “lose value, expire or be difficult to redeem” and airlines may change the number of status credit required to reach or maintain a higher tier. The Domestic Airline Competition report found that while jet-fuel prices had fallen by 12.3 percent in the financial year ending in June 2025, the average airfare was slightly higher than it had been a year earlier. The full ACCC statement and the report are attached. ...
