Australian supermarkets face up to A$10m in penalties under new price-gouging law

In a joint statement on Sunday, Australia’s Assistant Minister for Competition Andrew Leigh and Treasurer Jim Chalmers announced that the government has crafted new regulations to ban supermarket price gouging. The statement said that a supermarket found to have breached the new Competition and Consumer (Industry Codes— Food and Grocery) Amendment (Supermarkets Excessive Pricing Prohibition) Regulations would face A$10 million ($6.6 million) in penalties.
