Meta, Google and others push back on proposed UK online safety fees regime

In consultation responses published alongside the regulator’s final policy statement yesterday, the companies questioned the fairness and clarity of the approach to calculating annual fees and maximum penalties. One of the most vocal critics, Meta, called for a lower revenue threshold and a cap on individual contributions, while others argued the system is not sufficiently aligned with the EU’s Digital Services Act.Meta, Google, Microsoft and X are among the companies that have formally raised concerns over the proposed model to fund the UK's online safety regime. With services caught by the Online Safety Act, these Big Tech firms are questioning how regulator Ofcom intends to calculate the regulatory fees that will apply from next year, as well as maximum financial penalties....
