New South Korea science minister vows prompt action to bolster AI capabilities

( July 17, 2025, 02:34 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: South Korea’s new science minister pledged today to swiftly and boldly implement policy measures to achieve the goal of making the country one of the world’s top three artificial intelligence powerhouses, drawing on the expertise he accumulated in the private sector, including as head of the LG AI Research Institute. Bae Kyung-hoon, Minister of Science and ICT, also said in his inaugural speech that his ministry will “swiftly expand world-class AI infrastructure, including a national AI computing center and Supercomputer No. 6, to build an AI highway.” At the same time, he said the ministry will promptly draft decrees and regulations under the basic AI law, which is scheduled to take effect in late January 2026. He also pledged to introduce policy measures aimed at retaining domestic AI talent while simultaneously attracting experts from abroad.The speech, in Korean, is attached....
