Samsung chairman acquitted on unlawful merger, accounting fraud charges

( July 17, 2025, 03:26 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong has been acquitted of all charges tied to the 2015 merger of Cheil Industries and Samsung C&T, after South Korea’s Supreme Court upheld earlier rulings that found him not guilty of stock manipulation, unfair trading and accounting fraud. Lee was indicted in 2020 over allegations that the merger was engineered to consolidate his control of the conglomerate. But the top court affirmed the lower courts’ view that there was insufficient evidence to prove the alleged violations, saying: “There is no error in the lower courts’ rulings of not guilty on the grounds of insufficient evidence.” The statement, in Korean, is attached....
