New Mexico AG Torrez proposes AI legislation, probes OpenAI

( October 2, 2026, 00:19 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez and state Representative Linda Serrato proposed the Frontier Artificial Intelligence Safety and Accountability Act, which would require frontier AI developers to assess and disclose risk and allow the state attorney general to independently audit those disclosures. Torrez also sent a formal inquiry letter to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman about an agent from OpenAI attempting to breach the University of New Mexico's digital library.Full statement follows.
